Over the weekend I had a Nikon D3S HDLSR that I was testing out. I’ve been a Canon shooter for a while – but am attracted to several features in Nikon systems that Canon lacks. One of the less pressing features, but still very fun, is the ability to create multi exposure files in-camera. Below are two images I shot while in Etobicoke.

HDSLR + Steadicam Tests
I spent yesterday conducting some camera tests for an upcoming project where I’m planning on working closely with a Steadicam Operator. We shot the tests in Toronto’s docks area – using the Canon 5D Mark II, the Canon 7D, and the Nikon D3s. The photos below were taken by Melissa Tait.

Red Camera + HDSLR Talk at Westside Studio
I spent yesterday giving a talk at Westside Studio about the Red One Camera and HDSLR systems. Working with Krump Dancer Amadeus Marquez as subject, we compared and strengths and weaknesses of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, the Canon EOS 7D, and the Red One Camera. Personally I’ve used each of these systems for various applications – and its fair to say that each has their strength given the subject, budget, and time constraints of a project. This talk will hopefully be the first of many happening at Westside Studio over the coming months. The below images were taken by Aric Guite.

Flash Forward – Emerging Photographers 2010
I’m happy to say I’ve been included in The Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward Emerging Photographers selection. The work I submitted was a location portrait project that I photographed in fall 2009 – ‘The CFL Portrait Project’ focused on the fans of the Canadian Football League during the 97th Grey Cup in Calgary. In addition to the Flash Forward book and touring exhibition, the Magenta Foundation is launching the Flash Forward Festival this year in Fall 2010 – which will be focusing on Emerging Photographers in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Here are 3 images from my series.

The Globe and Mail – Style Story
I shot a Style Section story for The Globe and Mail last week. The subject was Women’s longskirts. We ended up shooting in 5 different locations, with 5 different wardrobe changes. Below is my favourite image from the shoot.

Landscape
Here’s a landscape I photographed in fall 2008. The painted mural was on the back of a grocery store somewhere in New York State.

New Project – Ballet!
Below is my newest project – “Ballet!”. This project was made possible with the support of the Ontario Arts Council Chalmers Arts Fellowship – which is presently funding my longterm project to ‘explore the structural elements of the moving image’. The on-screen subject is Dancer Rebecca Connor of Canada’s National Ballet School. Huge thanks to The National Ballet School for working with me on this project. I really enjoyed learning about the artform, and the NBS was very accommodating in allowing me to sit in on senior classes. Ballet! was created in a similar manner to my project RGB MOVE – it is comprised entirely of still photographs and lit exclusively with photographic strobes. The camera used was Canon’s EOS 1D Mark IV. The lighting was Broncolor’s Scoro A4S packs. Thanks to Photographer Arash Moallemi who was instrumental during the testing and production stages of this project. I collaborated closely with Editor Kyle Wilson during post-production. The Music was scored by James Crosby. As with all of my work I handled the colour grading personally. In addition to the actual project, below is also a short behind the scenes video that shows a little bit about the process of creating “Ballet!”.

The Globe and Mail – Style Story
I photographed a story for The Globe and Mail’s Style Section yesterday. I got the chance to use my new 100mm lens for the shoot – always very nice to play with a new lens. The story will be in print next Saturday. I’ll be sure to post a bunch of images from the shoot then. Below is a snapshot from one of the locations.
