This past weekend I collaborated with Editor Kyle Wilson as a team in The Young Lions Competition – a contest for media creatives under 28 years old. Kyle and I competed in the Film Category – we had a 48hr period to conceptualize, shoot, and deliver a 30 second PSA for a charity. I’ll be sure to post our project after the contest closes. Thanks to Kar Wai Ng for the photo below.

Ballet – Project Shoot
I spent yesterday at Westside Studio shooting a new motion project on Ballet with dancer Rebecca Connor of Canada’s National Ballet School. I’ve been testing a lot for this project in the last few weeks with the help of Photographer Arash Moallemi – exploring various camera, lighting, and post-production techniques. This project is connected to my work for the Chalmers Arts Fellowship that I am presently immersed in. Big thanks to the production crew for a very solid shoot day. The below behind-the-scenes images were taken by Photographer Eugen Sakhnenko.

Motion Picture Film – Hand Developing Workshop
I spent today at LIFT (The Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto) taking a workshop on hand developing motion picture film. As an image maker who caught the tail end of actually working with emulsion, I feel very lucky to have learnt to shoot with film, but cannot imagine working as I do now without the digitalization of photography and filmmaking. I’m very interested in exploring the rough quality of self developed emulsion, scanning it at a high resolution, and working with it in a digital environment. Here’s a few images from today’s workshop.

New Puppy – Canon PowerShot G11
My youngest brother Garcy got a new dog a few weeks back. Here’s an image I took today while visiting. The image below was shot with a Canon PowerShot G11 with handheld flash. I’m really loving the G11 – its great to have a camera on me all the time again.

CFL – Evaluation Camp Photo Essay
Over this past weekend I documented 4th ranked prospect Shomari Williams – a LB with Queen’s University – while he was put to the test at this year’s CFL Evaluation Camp in Toronto. The entire weekend was an incredible insight into the prospect selection process of The Canadian Football League. Below are a few images from the story, and here is a link to the full photo essay on the CFL’s website.

Ontario Arts Council – Media Artist Grant
Last week I found out that I am a recipient of a Media Artists Grant from The Ontario Arts Council for a project that I proposed on Boxing. I’ve very happy that the OAC is continuing to support my work through funding. Of all the Arts organizations in Canada, I’ve found them to be one of the most accessible.

Canon 1D Mark IV
I shot a portrait for The Globe and Mail yesterday in Ajax. After the shoot I got chance to check out the water and took a few images. After spending the weekend with Canon’s 1D Mark IV, I’m pretty impressed with it. I’ve been thinking of picking up a ’sports pro body’ for a while now – as I’ve been making use of their high frames per second on creative projects. I’ve been in the Canon camp since I picked up my first DSLR years ago, but I’m going to be testing out the Nikon D3s next week – very interesting.

CFL – Evaluation Camp
This weekend I documented CFL prospect Shomari Williams as he was sized up at this year’s CFL Evaluation Camp in Toronto. Over 60 prospects took part with scouts from all CFL teams present. The photo essay following Shomari Williams through evaluation camp will be posted on The CFL Website by mid-week. I’ll be sure to post a link on the blog. The image below is of player Steven Turner. On a technical note – I shot the majority of the images this weekend with Canon’s new 1D Mark IV, mostly at 3200-6400 ISO.

The National Ballet School
This morning I sat in on a session of The National Ballet School’s evaluation program – the senior ballet students were being formally reviewed by the institution’s staff. It was quite impressive to see the student’s perform. I walked away with a new appreciation of Ballet. I have been collaborating with a few dancers from The National Ballet School these past few weeks in preparation for a project – but prior to this knew nothing of the artform. It’s been an extremely educational process. I didn’t snap any pictures at the evaluation session today, but here’s a behind the scenes image from the first test conducted back in February.
