I’ve been asked to keep a blog this week by the News Photographers Association of Canada. If you’re interested in reading it here’s a link to Day 1.

My Mother’s Family name is Ryan, hence my first name. Yesterday was my Grandmother’s 85th Birthday, and over 60 family members of the Ryan Family came out for the celebrations. I set up a photobooth in my Grandmother’s living room – and I think I photographed everyone, but it was very hard to tell after a certain point. I plan to put together a series of images from shoot, but here’s a quick preview – my Uncle Mike, and my Second Cousin Jade.

I was assigned a portrait today by The Globe and Mail, which usually means alot of freedom in terms of creativity if you have the time. The one stipulation for this portrait was that I had to obscure the subject’s identity. After shooting a variety of safe silhouette images, I had the time to try a few different looks out. I shot a series of images with a slower shutter speed. Here’s one of my favourite out takes, it’s almost like a bad Jackson Pollack/Riopelle.

I just got back from covering the Toronto Indy. It was very loud environment, and everything smelled like gasoline – good times though. Here’s an out-take from my coverage of the race. It was a bike demo held before the final race.

I find myself shooting a lot of business portraits for The Globe and Mail. It’s interesting to chat with these people, given the economic mood. Some are pretty gloomy, others upbeat. Here’s one of my favourite business portraits so far. I photographed Financial Investor Doug Morrow a few weeks back.

I spent Canada Day down in Hamilton shooting a feature for the CFL. The concept of the story was to shoot everything that happens around the game. The 27 image piece can be seen on the CFL’s website here.

I just got back from spending Canada Day in Hamilton shooting a photo story for The CFL. I covered the events surrounding the opening season game between The Hamilton Tiger Cats and The Toronto Argonauts. The photo story will be up as a special feature on the new CFL website early next week. Here’s a behind the scene image from the shoot taken by Stephen Crosby.
