Guelph University

Filed under: photography — ryan enn hughes @ 1:33 pm

In September I shot a story for Report on Business Magazine about Guelph University.  I’m currently going through my photo archives for a contest – and came across this image.  I attended Ryerson University – so no big pep rallies.  It was quite the sight to see so many people in one place, with so much energy.

Behind the Scenes Fashion

Filed under: clip, motion — ryan enn hughes @ 3:33 pm

This is a behind the scenes fashion video that I shot and colour-grading for Photographer Arash Moallemi and his client VDS. I really like bringing a documentary photography style to this type of work. Editing is by Kyle Wilson (kewcreative.com), and music is The White Stripes’ “Ball and Biscuit”.  A much belated thank you goes out to Kar Wai Ng, my web-designer (lampshademedia.com).

Report on Business – Feature

Filed under: photography — ryan enn hughes @ 9:18 am

Today I started shooting a feature for Report on Business Magazine.  I’m working with Toronto based writer John Lorinc exploring the differences in public vs. private health care.  We spent the day riding along with a public health care worker in Hamilton, Ontario while she visited patients.  The finished story will be released in the June 2009 issue of ROB.

Globe and Mail Internship

Filed under: photography — ryan enn hughes @ 2:48 pm

I happy to report that I’ll be this year’s Globe and Mail Summer Photo Intern.  I’m excited to work with such a strong staff, and a paper that is a leader in pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling, both with the still and moving image.  Below is an photograph from the 2005 Toronto Caribana Festival. Hand developed, scratched for effect, tungsten balanced film.

Happy Birthday

Filed under: photography — ryan enn hughes @ 2:20 pm

I was at my parents house yesterday celebrating my oldest brother’s birthday.  Some G9 pics.  Love point and shoots…just wish they made one with no drag from when you press the button and when the photo is taken.

Tobogganing

Filed under: photography — ryan enn hughes @ 12:21 pm

A few weeks back, after I got back from my working trip in Hawaii I came home to a huge amount of snow.  I’ve been meaning to shoot a series on tobogganing for a while now.  Here’s an image from one of the days I was out shooting – there are some more images in the photo section of my website.

Royal York Hotel

Filed under: motion — ryan enn hughes @ 6:52 pm

I was at the Royal York Hotel today shooting a behind the scenes video of a fashion shoot for photographer Arash Moallemi.  I’m currently colour grading a similar video that I shot a few weeks back. I’ll be posting it on the blog soon.

Throwing Colour

Filed under: clip, motion — ryan enn hughes @ 6:03 pm

This is the first video that I ever made – I was 17 in Fall 2001.  I wanted to document the process of a visual arts project that I was doing, and this is the result.  If I remember correctly I made the art room uninhabitable for a few days due to the toxic fumes from all the mixed chemicals, paint, and plaster.  I don’t use paint so much these days, but I have been working extensively in Photoshop and now FCP’s Color.  The ability of a Colour Grade to establish a psychological and emotional impact is such a powerful tool in visual story telling, both in the still and moving image.  I see “the look”, colour itself becoming a major theme in the work I create.

Scott Jackson

Filed under: photography — ryan enn hughes @ 1:55 pm

A few weeks back I was commissioned to take the portrait of musician Scott Jackson.  Scott and I were born in the same part of Toronto, and so we decided to take the image in our old neighbourhood.  This photo was taken in a Lawrence Ave. bus shelter, between Weston Rd. and Jane St.
