Ballet + Krump 360

Filed under: motion, photography — ryan enn hughes @ 2:43 pm

Yesterday I wrapped production on two very exciting projects that were shot simultaneously. “Ballet 360” and “Krump 360” were created by collaborating with The Big Freeze – a USA based company specializing in the ‘time slice’ effect. The concept of these projects was to trigger 48 DSLR cameras at the same moment aligned in a 360-degree ring. The result is what I consider to be ‘360-degree Photography’. These twin projects are an extension of the Chalmers Arts Fellowship I have been undertaking this year – ‘to explore the structural elements of the moving image’. The subjects photographed were dancers from Canada’s National Ballet School (Ballet 360) and dancers from Northbuck Entertainment (Krump 360). These projects would not have been possible without the help of such a dedicated cast and crew – I can’t thank them enough. I’ll be posting content and notes on the post-process over the coming weeks as I begin to work with the files and assemble images to a 360-degree view. Below is a look at the production process – photos by Photographer Melissa Tait.

Broncolor (distributed by Amplis in Canada) has been very supportive of my creative experiments with light over this past year as part of The Chalmers Arts Fellowship I am undertaking. The new Bron.ca website is up with a section that will develop shortly highlighting Canadian Photography talent – worth checking out.

Fashion Creative

A few weeks back I was helping friend and Photographer Arash Moallemi with a creative project for a makeup company. Arash’s creative had both a still and motion component, and was lit with HMI units – the full project should be released shortly. Here’s a behind the scenes image I took on set.

Nikon D3S – Multi Exposures

Filed under: motion, photography — ryan enn hughes @ 7:58 pm

Over the weekend I had a Nikon D3S HDLSR that I was testing out. I’ve been a Canon shooter for a while – but am attracted to several features in Nikon systems that Canon lacks. One of the less pressing features, but still very fun, is the ability to create multi exposure files in-camera. Below are two images I shot while in Etobicoke.

HDSLR + Steadicam Tests

Filed under: motion, photography — ryan enn hughes @ 7:40 am

I spent yesterday conducting some camera tests for an upcoming project where I’m planning on working closely with a Steadicam Operator. We shot the tests in Toronto’s docks area – using the Canon 5D Mark II, the Canon 7D, and the Nikon D3s. The photos below were taken by Melissa Tait.

Red Camera + HDSLR Talk at Westside Studio

Filed under: Color Grading, motion, photography — ryan enn hughes @ 10:37 am

I spent yesterday giving a talk at Westside Studio about the Red One Camera and HDSLR systems. Working with Krump Dancer Amadeus Marquez as subject, we compared and strengths and weaknesses of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, the Canon EOS 7D, and the Red One Camera. Personally I’ve used each of these systems for various applications – and its fair to say that each has their strength given the subject, budget, and time constraints of a project. This talk will hopefully be the first of many happening at Westside Studio over the coming months. The below images were taken by Aric Guite.

New Project – Ballet!

Filed under: Color Grading, motion, music, photography — ryan enn hughes @ 6:52 pm

Below is my newest project – “Ballet!”. This project was made possible with the support of the Ontario Arts Council Chalmers Arts Fellowship – which is presently funding my longterm project to ‘explore the structural elements of the moving image’. The on-screen subject is Dancer Rebecca Connor of Canada’s National Ballet School. Huge thanks to The National Ballet School for working with me on this project. I really enjoyed learning about the artform, and the NBS was very accommodating in allowing me to sit in on senior classes. Ballet! was created in a similar manner to my project RGB MOVE – it is comprised entirely of still photographs and lit exclusively with photographic strobes. The camera used was Canon’s EOS 1D Mark IV. The lighting was Broncolor’s Scoro A4S packs. Thanks to Photographer Arash Moallemi who was instrumental during the testing and production stages of this project. I collaborated closely with Editor Kyle Wilson during post-production. The Music was scored by James Crosby. As with all of my work I handled the colour grading personally. In addition to the actual project, below is also a short behind the scenes video that shows a little bit about the process of creating “Ballet!”.
