Sketching Out Motion [New Ways Of Communication]

Filed under: clip, motion, music, photography — ryan enn hughes @ 4:02 pm

I currently have 7 personal motion projects that i’ve Directed in post-production.  I’m collaborating very closely with my Editors and Soundscape Composers.  Communication is the key – I visually dialogue with an Editor, and brainstorm using sounds with a Composer.  I’ve talked a bit about the Casio Exilim EX-F1.  Shooting at 300fps this prosumer Hybrid Camera is poor resolution, but perfect for “sketching out” a concept.  Being able to shoot, edit, and rough out a soundscape on my own allows me to communicate with a Cinematographer, an Editor, and a Soundscape Artist in a very clear and literal way.  The “Motion Sketches” that I’ve mocked up on the Casio are then re-shot with a camera such as the RED ONE and a crew.  I see these Motion Sketches as visual blueprints to the concept – nothing is set in stone, but a sketch is there to build off of and improve on.  Here is my first Casio “Motion Sketch” that I mocked up several weeks back.  The sketch was for a project titled “Swings” – that has since been shot and is in post-production presently. The sketch features my 12-year old brother Garcy – who has been my unwilling subject for years now.

Casio Exilim EX-F1

Filed under: Color Grading, clip, motion — ryan enn hughes @ 6:33 pm

I’m really enjoying shooting with my Casio Camera.  It’s poor resolution at 300fps – but great for mocking up projects and presenting a moving shot list to a Cinematographer.  I have several high-speed projects in the works right now, and being able to communicate visually in slow-motion with the camera department is proving invaluable.  As a Director/Photographer working with a Camera Team I want to be on the same page visually – the Casio is one more tool allowing me to do this.  Here’s a quick clip from a work in progress that I’ve mocked up on the Casio at 300fps.

Behind the Scenes Fashion

Filed under: clip, motion — ryan enn hughes @ 3:33 pm

This is a behind the scenes fashion video that I shot and colour-grading for Photographer Arash Moallemi and his client VDS. I really like bringing a documentary photography style to this type of work. Editing is by Kyle Wilson (kewcreative.com), and music is The White Stripes’ “Ball and Biscuit”.  A much belated thank you goes out to Kar Wai Ng, my web-designer (lampshademedia.com).

Throwing Colour

Filed under: clip, motion — ryan enn hughes @ 6:03 pm

This is the first video that I ever made – I was 17 in Fall 2001.  I wanted to document the process of a visual arts project that I was doing, and this is the result.  If I remember correctly I made the art room uninhabitable for a few days due to the toxic fumes from all the mixed chemicals, paint, and plaster.  I don’t use paint so much these days, but I have been working extensively in Photoshop and now FCP’s Color.  The ability of a Colour Grade to establish a psychological and emotional impact is such a powerful tool in visual story telling, both in the still and moving image.  I see “the look”, colour itself becoming a major theme in the work I create.
